Afghan rugs are recognisable by their thick wool and deep shades, often obtained from natural dyes. Kazaks with bold geometric motifs, Mohtashem, Samarkand, Baluch rugs, as well as flat-woven kilims and soumaks: many are knotted by refugee families who carry on a craft handed down from generation to generation.
